This year the world celebrates the 150th anniversary of Ernest Rutherford’s birth. In the end of July 2021, I spoke about my research and findings from Russian primary sources related to Lord Rutherford and his Russian students at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Lord Rutherford is held in the greatest esteem in New Zealand as a graduate of the University of Canterbury, a remarkable scholar and whose ground breaking research gives him the title of “the founder of nuclear physics.”

For the last five years I have been researching the Russian primary sources related to Lord Rutherford and his Russian students such as private correspondence, photos and diaries in the Archives in Russia. Recently I’ve published an article “Rutherford and Russian Physics: The Critical Influence of the Human Factor” in the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand (Article ID: TNZR 1914690). https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/03036758.2021.1914690

Listen to this fascinating topic about Lord Rutherford and his Russian connections, and how one of the world’s greatest scientists and most outstanding New Zealanders is perceived through Russian eyes. “People like Rutherford cease to be the national pride of the countries where they were born and where they worked – they become the pride of all mankind.” – Pyotr Kapitsa, Nobel laureate and Rutherford’s Russian student.

Also thank you to Radio New Zealand National for their interest to this topic, my live interview with Bryan Crump (Nights) here: https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/nights/audio/2018810314/ernest-rutherford-and-the-russian-connection
